I was really fascinated and impressed by all the posters the McNeil students designed and brought to our classroom today. What caught my attention the most is how many of the students were able to relate the simple operation integers to real-life situations or experiences. For example, some used food to represent integer relationships, while others used elements and sports. Many of these ideas were very creative and even novel to me, and the students themselves seemed to really enjoy working on these projects.
In my opinion, it's important for teachers to give students the opportunity to build "rapport" with the materials they learn in class, especially for math; teaching just the topics is easy, but to have students think actively and critically is a much more rewarding experience for both the teacher and the learner.
